This exhibit presents documents related to the question of whether the date given on the North Carolina state historic marker for the start of Parkway construction is correct.

When planning for the Blue Ridge Parkway 75th Anniversary began in the late 2000s, planners faced a conundrum in figuring out what the "start date" for Parkway construction actually was. A date of September 11, 1935 -- given on the state historic marker installed near the construction beginning site -- had long been used.

But in fact, historical documents conflict about when work actually began and suggest a number of possible dates that could be pegged as "the" anniversary.
